A CBF released, this Sunday (21), the audio from the VAR of the match between

Flamengo

and

Criciúma

, last Saturday, which was marked by a bizarre penalty – converted by Gabigol to give the

victory to the carioca team by 2-1

.

Both teams were tied at 1-1 until the 43rd minute of the second half, when, during a Flamengo attack, a second ball was thrown onto the field by the crowd.

While Everton Cebolinha was making a play inside the area, Barreto, a player from Criciúma, kicked the second ball towards the first one. The two objects touched each other, and the referee Maguielson Lima Barbosa pointed to a penalty in favor of Flamengo.

In the audio, the video assistant referee agrees and validates Maguielson’s decision.

See below the dialogue between the VAR and the field referee:

VAR:

there’s another ball on the field

Referee

(speaking at the time with players): penalty, penalty, penalty. It was a penalty. It’s a penalty, he kicks the ball at the main ball.

VAR:

the ball came from outside, not from the goalkeeper, all good.

Referee:

he kicks the ball (referee explains the play).

VAR:

Maguielson, correct decision, all checked.

What does the rule say?

According to the football rules manual, the penalty call is

correct

. A direct free kick (foul, in more commonly used terms) will be awarded if a player commits certain infractions, including “throwing an object towards the ball, an opponent, or a member of the refereeing team”.

That was exactly the movement made by Barreto, kicking a second ball towards the first one that was in play, deliberately to interfere with Flamengo‘s play.

However, the referee also had the option to stop the game if he believed that the second ball was interfering with the match. In this scenario, even the VAR could intervene if they believed the play should be reviewed.

The video refereeing, however, chose to uphold the on-field decision. Maguielson Lima Barbosa was right on the play and pointed to the penalty, to the annoyance of Criciúma players and the joy of Gabigol, who commented after the game.

“I had never seen (a penalty like that), but I think it’s the rule. The referee did everything right, and I’m glad I was there to take the penalty,” said the number 99 player.

Penalty on Arrascaeta

Another controversial play also caught attention in the match. At the 18th minute of the 1st half, when the game was 0-0, the referee awarded a penalty for Rodrigo’s foul on Arrascaeta after VAR check. Initially, Maguielson did not see the penalty, but changed his mind with the help of the video assistant referee. Pedro took the shot, and goalkeeper Gustavo saved it.

Referee:

for me it’s a minimal contact, he was out of control of the ball, feels the contact and falls.

VAR:

the contact is enough to bring him down, I suggest a review for a possible penalty.

Referee:

Releases at normal speed, I already saw the contact point. Indeed, the player loses his stride, hits with his right foot. I will change my decision, award a penalty without a card, ok?

VAR:

Ok, good decision
