Barreto kicked a ball over one that was under Everton Cebolinha’s control, resulting in a penalty for Flamengo
Flamengo turned the game around against Criciúma with a penalty kick, in which Barreto, a player from Criciúma, kicked a ball over another one that was under Everton Cebolinha’s control. As a result, Maguielson Lima Barbosa, the referee of the match, signaled the penalty. After the match, the midfielder from the Santa Catarina team revealed what he thought at that moment.
— It was a bizarre play. In my mind, it was instinct. When I saw the second ball on the field, I had in mind that two balls involved in the same play couldn’t be right. I kicked it against the opponent really so that the referee would notice that there were two balls. I didn’t know it would be a penalty, or else I wouldn’t have done it. My intention was for the ref to notice that there were two balls -, explained Barreto, leaving the Mané Garrincha stadium in Brasília.
IT WAS INTENTIONAL! 🗣️
Barreto confesses that he kicked the second ball with the intention of showing the referee its existence and said that if he knew it would be a penalty, he wouldn’t have done it.

After the play, the referee followed the rules and interpreted the play as a direct free kick. As it happened inside the box, the referee signaled a penalty. In the kick, Gabigol outsmarted the Criciúma goalkeeper and scored Flamengo‘s second goal in the match.
CRICIÚMA’S GOALKEEPER AGREED WITH THE PENALTY CALL
Gustavo, Criciúma’s goalkeeper, commented on the play as he left the field. In the player’s view, the penalty was correctly called, but the goalkeeper lamented the interference of the fans in throwing a ball onto the field.
— The feeling is one of frustration. We played an excellent match against a great team. We didn’t pay attention to the opponent or the fans. I think today we were harmed because the fans interfered with the score. They threw a ball onto the field, and our player got confused, kicking the ball thinking it was still in play. The referee followed the rules. But we leave with our heads held high, knowing that we are doing a great job -, declared Gustavo.
Flamengo‘S NEXT MATCH
First and foremost, Flamengo secured three more points and, depending on the results of this Saturday (20), could finish the round in second place in the Brasileirão, with 34 points.
